Will taking anti-inflammatories help or hinder my injury?

It depends! Anti-inflammatories can often provide some much needed pain relief and reduced swelling in the first few days following an injury, and sometimes even for a few weeks. This is particularly true for soft tissue injuries like sprains or bruises.

But we can often be a bit blasé with medications which are available from the supermarket or dairy. They are still powerful drugs, with side effects and the potential to be toxic, particularly when they are used inappropriately. Also, we’re starting to see evidence that certain anti inflammatories can slow or even reverse progress in certain injuries, like Achilles or rotator cuff tendon damage.

If you’re in any doubt whatsoever, we would always recommend speaking to your physiotherapist, GP, practise nurse or local pharmacist before any self medicating.
